Purple passion B. Duane Cross, SI.com Already on record with Miami as my really early preseason AFC representative in Super Bowl XXXIX, the next logical question is: Which team from the NFC will the Dolphins beat? One thing is certain: It will come from a field of six. And while it's easier to divide the AFC into haves and have-nots, the NFC is as muddled as it is strung out. Only Arizona can be deemed a pretender in a conference of contenders; since 1999, every NFC team has been to the playoffs at least once ... yep, except for the Cardinals. Ten AFC teams over the past five years have played .500-plus ball. The NFC boasts of six, including a conference-leading 56-24 mark by St. Louis (tied with Tennessee for the best record in the NFL since 1999). So which NFC team is most likely to make the trip to Jacksonville? Again let's work from the bottom up: ADVERTISEMENT • Atlanta -- The Falcons may have the game's most exciting player in Michael Vick, but he is only a part of the puzzle. And the other pieces of a championship team have yet to be put into place, specifically on defense. That said, drafting CB DeAngelo Hall was a great first step for new head coach Jim Mora Jr. • New Orleans -- This is the make-or-break season for Aaron Brooks. And is it too soon to say the same thing about 2002 draft pick Donte Stallworth? Both of these guys need to find their 'A' games and live up to the expectations. Is it any wonder the Saints took WR Devery Henderson in Round 2? • Carolina -- Just as the one-armed man kept The Fugitive on the run, this one-receiver team will run and run and run some more. It's been three years since WR Muhsin Muhammad had a 1,000-yard season, and Ricky Proehl (coaxed back for a 15th season) was a rookie during the first Bush administration. • Tampa Bay -- This team is too talented -- even with its offseason losses -- not to compete for a playoff berth. Then again, judging by DT Warren Sapp's recent seasons, can he be considered as a 'loss' for the Bucs? Rookie safety Will Allen won't make fans forget John Lynch -- this year. But in time ... • Green Bay -- Hey, I appreciate Brett Favre as much as the next fan, but this team cannot win on his wing alone. And raise your hand if you believe CB Ahmad Carroll can be a shutdown corner against Randy Moss twice a year -- or Philly's Terrell Owens in the playoffs. I'm still dumbfounded that Mike Sherman bypassed DE Jason Babin -- especially when the Packers took another CB, Joey Thomas, with their second pick. • St. Louis -- The Rams' recent drafts should begin to pay dividends this season. And with the free-agency losses of DE Grant Wistrom and DT Brian Young, second-year DT Jimmy Kennedy needs to catch up with fellow 2002 draftee LB Pisa Tinoisamoa. Rookie DE Tony Hargrove will be worth watching, especially once he gets back into football shape. • Philadelphia -- Yep, bridesmaids -- again! Adding DE Jevon Kearse two years after Hugh Douglas departed is a step in the right direction, but losing Bobby Taylor and Troy Vincent in the same offseason ... that's two steps back. I'd like Philly's chances a lot more if Andy Reid would scrap the traditional fullback/tailback tandem for a split backfield with Correll Buckhalter and Brian Westbrook. • Minnesota -- The Vikings came one Josh McCown-to-Nathan Poole answered prayer away from making the playoffs last season. This year, I don't think Minnesota will have any trouble putting away a postseason berth before the fourth-quarter clock strikes 0:00 in Week 17. Minnesota's top four draft picks -- DE Kenechi Udeze, LB Dontarrious Thomas, DE Darrion Scott and T Nat Dorsey -- were on target and fifth-round LB Rod Davis is another keeper. Even though RB Michael Bennett missed eight games last season, the Vikings still managed to lead the league in offense (393.4 yards per game). With Bennett back at 100 percent, Minnesota's passing game will become even more effective. Daunte Culpepper is now sixth on the NFL's all-time passer rating list, while the emergence of WRs Kelly Campbell and Nate Burleson makes double-teaming Randy Moss a huge gamble. (Not to mention the addition of free-agent Marcus Robinson and the re-signing of TE Jim Kleinsasser.) However, the storyline of free agency was the theft -- what else to call it? -- of Antoine Winfield from under the noses of the Jets. All but signed sealed and delivered to the J-E-T-S, Minnesota cut the purse strings and signed the cornerback to a six-year, $34.8 million deal (including a signing bonus of $10.8M), the biggest free-agent contract in franchise history. If the Vikings advance to face the Dolphins in Super Bowl XXXIX, it will be the 10th time the title-game teams have played in multiple Super Bowls. Dallas is 2-0 against Buffalo, San Francisco is 2-0 against Cincinnati, Pittsburgh is 2-1 against Dallas and Washington and Miami split two games. A Minnesota-Miami matchup would be the same pairing as Super Bowl VIII, when Larry Csonka rushed 33 times for a then-Super Bowl-record 145 yards, while Bob Griese completed 6 of 7 passes for 73 yards in the Dolphins' 24-7 victory. Sadly for Vikings fans, I can see -- through the thick summer smog -- Ricky Williams and Jay Fiedler doing similar things as Minnesota falls to 0-5 in the big game.

NFL cuts make free agents of ex-stars Warner, Testaverde
June 2, 2004 NEW YORK (AFP) - Quarterbacks Vinny Testaverde and Kurt Warner have been released in the second wave of American football free agency, leaving both stars looking for a new National Football League (NFL) home. The Jets released Testaverde on Wednesday, paving the way for the 40-year-old quarterback to reunite with former coach Bill Parcells in an expected signing with the Dallas Cowboys . Warner, who led St. Louis to a 1999 Super Bowl title, is considered the top free agent available as clubs are allowed spread salary cap penalties over two seasons, creating a final wave of cuts before next month's training camps open. ADVERTISEMENT St. Louis released Warner on Tuesday and the New York Giants , seeking a veteran to mentor rookie Eli Manning, are in the chase to sign him. Testaverde enjoyed the best season of his 17-year career with the Jets in 1998 when Parcells was the coach, throwing for 29 touchdowns with just seven interceptions. Parcells wants Testaverde to compete with Quincy Carter for the Cowboys' starting job in 2004 while Drew Henson learns the offense. Testaverde would also reunite with ex-Jets receiver Keyshawn Johnson, obtained from Tampa Bay. "I appreciate the Jets allowing me to move on with my career," said Testaverde, who spent the last six years of his 17-year career with the Jets. "We had some exciting moments on the field and memories I can take with me." By waiting until June to release Testaverde, the Jets will spread his salary cap over two seasons. He will count 3.5 million dollars in 2004 and four million in 2005. Had he stayed, the 2004 cost would total 4.5 million dollars. Warner was a journeyman who played in NFL Europe who entered as a substitute and led the Rams to a Super Bowl triumph over Tennessee. But his exit gives the Rams 4.85 million dollars in salary money to spent elsewhere. Warner has been slowed by injuries the past two years and lost his starting job after six fumbles in last year's season opener, when he played with a concussion. The Washington Redskins cut linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, running back Trung Canidate and guard Dave Fiore on Wednesday, saving 4.7 million dollars under the salary cap, money used to sign veteran tight end Fred Baxter on Wednesday. Trotter was a disappointment in two years with Washington after signing a seven-year deal for 35 million dollars. Canidate became expendable when the Redskins acquired Clinton Portis from Denver in March. Fiore was signed to a four-year contract worth 6.5 million dollars last year but missed 13 of 16 games due to knee problems. A 12-year veteran, Baxter will likely serve as a blocking tight end behind projected starter Walter Rasby

As season approaches, Gannon will depart
By Tim Kawakami, Mercury News Staff Columnist Rich Gannon is still a Raider, in theory if not in his heart and soul. So if Gannon wants out and if the Raiders expect Kerry Collins to be their starting quarterback in September and if there's no sane way to keep both men on the roster for long . . . what happened? Why weren't Gannon and his $7.1 million salary released earlier this week at the same time Kurt Warner, Vinny Testaverde and Jeremiah Trotter were jettisoned by their franchises? ADVERTISEMENT Upon further review, we circled the wrong target date for the eventual and still-inevitable Gannon ejection (or escape) from Raider Island. Contrary to the generally accepted wisdom about this uniquely secretive situation, the Raiders never had much intention of releasing Gannon this week, next week or any time before the season opener. June 1 was a bogus, media-created deadline in this case. Oops. (I blame the messy madness of NFL salary-cap calculus.) June 1 is when teams dump players if they need room under the cap to sign their draft choices or more free agents, which is not an issue for the Raiders. THE REAL DATE TO WATCH: Sept. 7, the Tuesday before the regular-season opener, when Gannon will be due his first game check of $417,647 and when he probably will refuse to accept a pay cut for the hundredth and final time. That's the day Gannon will be cut. The Raiders have no incentive to release him sooner; they don't owe him any part of his salary until then, so why let him out now to sign with Jon Gruden in Tampa Bay? If Collins is healthy and looks OK, he's the Raiders' starter, period. He fits Coach Norv Turner's offense better, and he's not young enough to waste a year sitting behind Gannon. You sure don't want Gannon simmering on the sideline as Collins' backup. But it doesn't cost the Raiders anything to keep the former league MVP around through camp just in case Collins goes awry. Remember when New England released safety Lawyer Milloy last season? It was the week of the 2003 opener, when Milloy refused one last attempt to cut his salary and the Patriots released him to avoid paying him a cent. I asked an NFL executive Wednesday if Gannon's situation with the Raiders mirrored Milloy's with the Patriots in any way, and he said, "It's exactly the same." OF COURSE, THE PROCESS could be sped up if an attractive new free agent hits the market and the Raiders need fast cap room to make the move. Would Tennessee workhorse Eddie George, still negotiating with the Titans about a possible pay cut, be worth the trouble for a roster that lacks definition at running back? No way, I was told. He's a big name with a terrible recent downturn in production and hasn't been able to break tackles for a few seasons now.

Gutes Geschäft, Kurt Warner kommt. Collins verlässt uns - na endlich.
Einmal ne Zeit lang 'Mr.Interception', dann wieder Rückfall zu 'alten Fumble-Zeiten'.. Dabei steckt doch soviel Potenzial in ihm, er ruft es bloß nie konstant ab(!).

Wer, die Raiders? Bist Du so pessimistisch?

NFL fines Cooper, Robbins and Stubblefield for THG violation DAVE GOLDBERG, AP Football Writer Wednesday, July 14, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (07-14) 12:04 PDT NEW YORK (AP) -- Chris Cooper and Barret Robbins of the Oakland Raiders and free agent Dana Stubblefield have been fined three game checks by the NFL for testing positive for the steroid THG. They also were placed on "reasonable-cause testing" for the rest of their careers, and will be suspended for eight games if they test positive for any steroid again. The action was the result of an agreement announced Wednesday by the NFL and the players' union that has been pending since last October. Cooper and Stubblefield are defensive lineman, and Robbins is a center. A fourth player, linebacker Bill Romanowski, also tested positive, although the league didn't identify him by name. He announced his retirement after last season, and his case is still pending. Robbins' fine totals $234,375, based on his 2004 salary of $1.25 million. Cooper's fine is $187,500, based on a salary of $1 million. Stubblefield's fine will be determined by his salary when or if he signs. All four players were with the Raiders at the time they were tested and when THG was identified. Stubblefield and Cooper, along with teammates Tyrone Wheatley, a running back, and Chris Hetherington, a fullback, all appeared before a grand jury investigating a nutritional supplements lab -- the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative -- which has been at the center of a steroids controversy in several sports. The league said they were the only positive samples in 1,700 retests of every sample taken before last Oct. 6. The league also said there were no positive samples in more than 4,000 tests since that date. Normal league policy mandates a four-game suspension for players who test positive for steroids the first time. That differs from the league policy for most other drugs, in which a player isn't suspended until a second violation. The reasoning behind that is that steroids provide the player using them with a competitive advantage. In this case, however, the fines were agreed upon as a compromise after negotiations between the league and the NFL Players' Association. The union had challenged the NFL's authority to retest specimens deemed to be negative after an initial screening. "This case presented a unique set of facts not addressed by the parties when the policy was written," Harold Henderson, the NFL's vice president for labor relations, said in a statement. "Resolving the dispute required compromise by both sides, but the most important point is that our policy is now stronger." Henderson said in the future, users of any newly discovered steroid "will be caught and disciplined in the same manner as those who test positive for known substances." Gene Upshaw, the union's executive director, said the organization appealed what originally were four-game suspensions because of the precedent involved. "We felt from the start that there was nothing in our agreed policy to allow for going back to test old samples long after they were found to be negative," Upshaw said. "This is an unusual case." |

die goldgräber wären heuer mit einem 5-11 record noch gut bedient. ein derart schwacher rivale in der nfc west ist nur zu begrüßen, können meine hawks die säcke aus san fran doch 2x verprügeln.
gil brandt bewertet die aussichten von seattle im übrigen wie folgt: Seattle Seahawks This team has a chance to play for the NFC Championship. They're a very, very good offensive team with what should be an improved defense. The problem Seattle has is playing on the road, where they'll start the 2004 season. They give up a lot of points on the road and don't win as often. If they can avoid traveling in the playoffs and earn home-field advantage, they'll be very tough to beat. ich kann dem guten mann nur vollinhaltlich zustimmen. ![]() ps. erinnere mich niemand an das spiel in baltimore letzte saison...
